A university student in the UK has designed an eco-friendly vacuum cleaner made from its own cardboard packaging.

Jake Tyler, 23, from Birmingham, came up with the idea as part of his final year project at Loughborough University.

And manufacturer Vax was so impressed it is going to mass produce it and put it on sale next year.

Created with the help of engineers at Vax, the vacuum is made up from the very box that it comes in - even down to the wheels.

Tyler commented: "It's all a bit surreal to see my university project get internationally recognised up to the point where it is going to be sold.

"Environmental stability was in at forefront of the design and that is why I used cardboard.

"Most consumer electrics need to be taken to a landfill site, my idea was to have something recyclable. And you can build it yourself so you feel part of the product."

Tyler, who achieved a first class honours degree in his Industrial Design and Technology course, has now landed his dream job with Vax.
