EU social partners to host Brussels event with public procurement focus

Social partner organisations in commercial cleaning, private security and contract catering services are inviting industry stakeholders to an event on November 14 in Brussels seeking to tackle the issues around EU provisions regulating public procurement.

Entitled 'Improving EU Public Procurement: A Vision from the Industrial Cleaning, Private Security, and Contract Catering Services', the event will engage with policymakers, stakeholders and sector representatives. The aim is to analyse the far-reaching consequences of EU provisions regulating public procurement. In the current landscape of inflation, the discussions are poised to delve into the core of our work and illustrate paths for improvement.

EFCI will be representing the contract cleaning sector.

Security, cleaning and catering are crucial sectors in a functioning society - and all of them are labour-intensive, relying heavily on public sector clients.

According to the European Commission, every year more than 250,000 public authorities spend around €2 trillion on works, goods or services - an amount that corresponds to a seventh of the EU GDP.

Public procurement provisions - regulated at EU level by a directive of 2014 - have effects that go beyond the simple dimension of public spending, since they have an influence on the procurement behaviour of other clients in the private sector and can be fundamental in promoting innovative practices, better working conditions and more viable contractual settings.

The event will be chaired by EFCI president Lorenzo Mattioli and he will be joined by Terje Mikkelsen, vice president of UNIEuropa, and Rocco Renaldi, secretary general of FoodServiceEurope. Marie Pierre Vedrenne, a member of the European Parliament from the Renew Europe Group, will also be there.
