UK budget cuts force school heads to clean toilets

Reports in the UK national press say head teachers are cleaning school toilets, sweeping floors and washing up after lunch because of funding cuts.

Smaller budgets mean that cleaners and caretakers are often being sacked. An investigation in The Times revealed head teachers are most seriously affected - they reported cleaning up after school lunch, vacuuming, unblocking toilets and coming into school in the holidays to deep clean the school hall and polish the floor.

One school said: "We need a caretaker, so our business manager does not have to unblock toilets on a weekly basis. None of this is possible because we do not receive enough core funding from the government."
