Glastonbury Festival ranked best for toilet access

Glastonbury has been awarded top festival ranking for washroom access by trailer manufacturer Diamond Trailers.

The company based its findings on the Let Loos metric, which estimates that festival venues need to offer at least one toilet per 75 women plus one cubicle per 400 men and one urinal per 100 men.

Study authors calculated that Glastonbury would need 2,742 toilets and urinals to adequately serve its 210,000 capacity. And since the venue claims to have installed around 5,000 toilets for this year's event it appears to offer well above this minimum requirement.

Edinburgh International Festival was ranked second and the Radio 1 Big Weekend was third in the Diamond Trailers' poll.

"For many festival-goers the toilets might be a source of discomfort and frustration," according to the company. "But with the appropriate planning and mindset, visitors can make the most of their festival experience."

Diamond Trailers recommends taking one's own toilet paper and hand sanitiser to events and also avoiding using the toilets during peak periods. Glastonbury Festival takes place from June 21-26 at Worthy Farm, Somerset.

Music festivals are notorious for their washroom provision. A shortage of toilets - particularly facilities with disabled access - caused outrage among people attending the Northern Kin Festival in Ushaw, County Durham in May, for example.

Organisers blamed the chaos on bad weather and supply issues, claiming they had called in plumbers and ordered more portable toilets to address the problems. But revellers said the situation was a health and safety nightmare and that the event should have been called off.
