Singapore shows its appreciation to cleaners
11th of July 2014More than 10,000 cleaners in Singapore are to be given prizes, outings and certificates in a show of appreciation for the work they carry out.
High teas, lunches and other treats will be provided as part of an "Appreciating U" movement run by the country's National Trades Union Congress.
Around 200 organisations - including employers in both the private and public sector - have pledged to show appreciation for their cleaners. Besides hosting meals, some will offer vouchers, outings, film screenings and certificates of recognition to their staff.
"As we continue to push for better jobs for our low-wage workers, we must remember that nurturing a culture of kindness towards them also contributes to more meaningful lives for them and their families," said assistant secretary-general of the National Trades Union Congress Zainal Sapari
A total of 26 cleaners nominated by their employers for "outstanding work performance" were presented with certificates during an inaugural "Appreciating U" event.
Singapore's cleaners are also being invited to promote themselves via Facebook to compete for a prize of up to S$100 in vouchers. In a Tribute to Cleaners online contest, cleaners are being asked to upload a "selfie" to Facebook and add in a caption. The prize will go to the cleaner with the most Facebook "likes".
More employers are expected to come on board to appreciate their cleaners over the coming months and there are plans to extend the "Appreciate U" initiative to other segments of Singapore's workforce including security officers, nurses and migrant workers.
